´s have their shells stored in a separate compartment (western) or special protective lockers (russian). Even if it weren´t so, a frag grenade would normally not ignite the ammo anyway, just kill the crew. Those things don´t have much explosive power, they rely primarily on splinters.

I found some info on the "tank guy" Shawn Nelson, a plumber and resident of San Diego.
He was a out of work meth head. He was drunk and on speed when he decided to steal a tank. He was in the Army at one time obviously, he knew how to drive a fucking tank like it was a car. Did you know this guy started a gold mineshaft in his backyard? Homeboy was mining for gold in his backyard.
