You're essentially correct, matty. But it wasn't Mike who shut down Smile, it was Brian.
Brian was faced with so much opposition that he had to decide between breaking up the band and going solo or placating his mates. He decided to preserve The Beach Boys and, therefore, Smile had to be scrapped. Mistake at the time? Maybe. So many decisions; so little time. Thankfully, Brian
finally completed the project anyway. Oh, and to you, Mike Love? Listen to this and suck it.

simply amazing and heartbreaking. You can hear the saddness and pain in his voice. One of the best beach boys/brain wilson songs. Its complex yet simple.

Brian has admitted that the fact the other guys weren't sure about SMiLE was a big factor in shelving it. Mike Love was apparently the biggest critic and he had a hand in driving off Van Dyke Parks due to several disagreements about lyrics. When Parks left, that was another big blow to SMiLE.

this wasn't a good vocal performance...i swear that you beach boys fans think that no one else can sing like this...which just sounds delusional...is there emotion there? YES. are the vocals good? NOT QUITE. beach boys were limited vocally...as a group, their harmonies were very good though.anyways, i love this freakin clip.he is performing a demo of one of the most beautiful tracks of all time.i cannot question this man's songwriting and arranging talents. musical prodigy, he was

i agree with you; i think the deal with Brian's falsetto is that it is more than just some powerful voice, but it evokes the thoughts/emotions of a better time.

Dreambro, I think that Brian is the best voice I've ever heard. That's maybe because a voice comes out with a soul. Even neil young wasn't perfect in his singing, but try to find out another soul like that. It depends on what you want from a man: His soul or his technique?

I have a version of 'Surf's Up' on 'GOOD VIBRATIONS: 30 YEARS OF THE BEACH BOYS' where Brian sings an absolutely perfectly pitched demo of this song that makes you cry when listening. This is the best song ever written!
